BCC Baseball & Softball Players Recieve All Region Honors

Posted in Sports on May 2, 2010 by bccstall

Brookdale, which was previously ranked number one in the National Division III softball poll earlier this season, has  five players who recived All-Region honors.  Four players earned first-team honors in freshman pitcher Kerilyn Svenson (Raritan), freshman first baseman Tracey Stern (Shore Regional), freshman outfielder Amanda Svenson (Middletown North) and sophomore catcher Christina Masitti (Freehold Township). Honored for the second consecutive year, sophomore utility player Samantha Deixler (Southern Regional) earned a nod on the second team.

Svenson, who transferred in after one semester at the University of New Haven, has a record of 23-3 and has only allowed 20 earned runs in 153 innings of work good for an National sixth-best ERA of .915.  She averages 1.24 strike outs per inning, which is fourth in the NJCAA, and is equally impressive in the batters’ box.  The Middletown product is hitting .357 with 20 RBIs.

The national leader in homeruns, Stern has powered 12 long balls in 43 games and leads the team in RBIs with 56 while also scoring 45 runs of her own.  Her batting average currently sits at .396.

A rightfielder with a cannon for an arm, Svenson has made a name for herself in the power department, as well.  With seven homeruns, which is eighth on the National leaderboard, and 15 RBIs, this .417 hitter is leading the team with 55 hits.

Making the transition from outfield to catcher proved not to be a daunting task for sophomore Masitti.  In fact, she is enjoying her best season yet, hitting .355 with four homeruns.

Deixler was named to the all-tournament team during last year’s National tournament run for the Jersey Blues and hasn’t let up on being a seniority figure this year.  With 42 RBIS, 14 doubles and three homeruns, Deixler’s batting average sits at .386 heading into the postseason.

All five players have kept their respective positions for the all-Garden State Athletic Conference team.

The Lady Blues, who earned the second-seed in the Region XIX tournament, have earned a bye in first-round play but will return to action next weekend (May 7-8) when Ocean County College hosts the 2010 Region XIX softball tournament.

On the baseball side of things, seven players from the nationally-ranked team earned All-Region XIX honors, as announced by the league Wednesday.  Five Jersey Blues garnered spots on the first team with sophomore catcher Nick Gaeta (Montville), second baseman David Nunez(Belmar), sophomore outfielder Andrew Archer (St. John Vianney), freshman designated hitter Leiby Gonzalez (Santo Domingo, D.R) and sophomore pitcher JC Menna (Red Bank Catholic) receiving nods, while sophomore outfielder Eddie Martin (Raritin) and freshman pitcher Brian Conrad (Souderton) were named to the second team.

Menna, whose fastball has been clocked upwards of 94 MPH this year, has a record that currently sits at 4-1.  In 27.1 innings pitched, the righty has let up only four earned runs and has struck out 34 batters.  His ERA is a stingy 1.317.

Conrad made an immediate impact on the Jersey Blues squad.  A transfer from LaSalle, his record thus far is 3-1 and he holds a 1.57 ERA while fanning 27 batters in just 23 innings of work.

A mainstay behind the plate, Gaeta is as consistent on defense as he is in the batter’s box.  The Montville native is hitting .406 and has team-high 24 RBIs.

A speedy lead-off man, Gonzalez’s on-base percentage is just under .500  and hit .390 on the year with 19 runs and 24 RBIs.

Although Nunez doesn’t necessarily carry a heavy bat, he has a knack for finding the gaps, belting a team-high 12 extra base hits while hitting .410.

A pair of leaders in the outfield, Martin and Archer have combined for 20 doubles and 44 runs this season.  Archer, however, leads the team in batting average with a blazing .426 while Martin bats .378.

All five first-team Region XIX honorees have also earned first-team Garden State Athletic Conference honors, and Martin is the sole Jersey Blue representative on the all-GSAC second team.

Brookdale Men’s Lacrosse Crowned Region XIX Champion

Posted in Uncategorized on April 28, 2010 by bccstall

The number-two seed Brookdale Community College won its first-ever NJCAA Region XIX Championship with a 10-9 victory over the top seeded County College of Morris this afternoon.

The second-ranked Jersey Blues, who improve to 9-5 on the season (Region XIX 4-1) took full advantage of their second Region XIX title game appearance in the squad’s second year of existence.  The 2009 season was the first full varsity schedule Brookdale ever played, to which they suffered a defeat to Del-Tech Terry in the championship round.

In the 2010 chapter, Morris jumped out to a quick 4-0 start in the first seven minutes of the opening frame.  However, led by tournament MVP John Tanner (Rumson-Fair Haven) in goal, the Brookdale defense held Morris scoreless in the second stanza. The Jersey Blue offense, powered by freshman Ryan Olsen (Old Bridge), who finished the game with four goals, had no problem stepping up to the plate, as they rallied to score three consecutive goals to enter halftime behind by only one.

Brookdale scored two more unanswered goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, with Olsen’s shot at 5:37 handing the Jersey Blues their first lead of the game 5-4.

Freshman midfielder John Felicetti (Old Bridge) would then strike from his knees at 15-yards out to increase the Jersey Blues’ lead by two.  Following the faceoff from Felicetti’s score, defender Sean Cunningham (Christian Brothers) took the ball the length of the field in only 13 seconds to give the Jersey Blues a 7-4 edge over the top-seeded team.

Morris responded with two goals of its own as Tom McAndrews (Randolph) and David Soule (Kinnelon) would both find the back of the net, to close the gap 7-6 heading into the final break.  The Titans weren’t  going to go quietly, as Tom Walsh (Morris Hills) tied the game from a wide open stance :21 seconds into the final stanza.

Thanks to a low corner shot by Felicetti, who finished the game with four points (three goals, one assist), and a powerful rip by Olsen, the Jersey Blues reached their 10-goal mark with 7:28 remaining in the game. Morris would score a quick two more goals, but it would prove to be not enough as Brookdale controlled the clock to remain the victors.  Tanner recorded 13 saves in the winning effort and freshman Kenny Bogert (Brick Township) also contributed with two goals and one assist.

Brookdale will now host the winner of the Suffolk/Nassau game in the District 2 playoff for a berth into the NJCAA National Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 1st.

The Recreation Education Center (the addition to the Collins Arena) is on schedule for a July 1 opening. The REC consists of a two-court gymnasium and the Athletic department offices.  Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work has passed have initial inspections and sheetrock is flying up on the interior walls.
In the new gymnasium, the ceiling is painted and the light fixtures have already been hung.  On the exterior, finish grading has begun and weather permitting, the finished concrete sidewalks and landscaping will be done in time for Brookdale’s May 16.
Keep in mind, too, that the second floor Fitness Center is also part of the REC. That should open by the end of August.

Earth Day Network announced that Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Bob Weir, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Passion Pit, Q-Tip, Booker T and other artists will perform at The Climate Rally on The National Mall in Washington, DC on Sunday, April 25. In honor of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, these influential musicians along with political, environmental, religious and civil-rights leaders will join with a massive audience of concerned citizens to call on Congress to pass an effective and equitable climate and clean energy bill in 2010.
The day of speeches, live music and eco-village exhibits on The National Mall caps off nine days of service projects, advocacy events, performance arts and exhibits organized by Earth Day Network from April 17to 25.
“Forty years after the first Earth Day, we are joined by some of today’s most influential artists and thought-leaders around the world with a clear agenda for Earth Day’s 40thAnniversary,” said Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day. “Together, we will issue the call to our elected leaders that now is the time to create ambitious legislation for climate change and a green economy.”

Forty years ago, the National Mall served as a focal point for the first Earth Day and a 20 million citizens strong, country-wide, unified demand to protect and clean up the environment. This year, the U.S. flagship Earth Day events on the National Mall will once again act as a rallying point for the nation.
