Lady Blues Head To National Championship With 3-1 Win Over Itasca

In a pitchers dual, Kerilyn Svenson (Raritan Valley) showed why she was voted the Region XIX Player of the Year, as Brookdale (44-10) earned a spot in the NJCAA Division III softball title game with a 3-1 win over Itasca (51-6).

“The first five innings lasted 40 minutes, so that will tell you how great both pitchers were today,” Brookdale head coach Bo Scannapieco commented. “It was an all-around awesome softball game.”

Svenson pitched a complete game, striking out six and scattering four hits while allowing only one earned run.

The freshman righty had just enough run support, though, as the Jersey Blues would strike first in the bottom of the fourth.  Tracey Stern (Shore Regional) was the Blues’ first base runner, with a single to start the inning.  After a heads-up base running move – tagging up on a foul ball – to advance to second, sophomore catcher Christina Masitti (Freehold Twp.) hit a  grounder that the second baseman couldn’t handle, to plate Stern and give the Blues the 1-0 advantage.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth, freshman left fielder Vanessa Flores (Wall) hit a rocket to left-center for her first extra-base hit of the tournament and was advanced to third by a Kara Kelsey (Middletown North) sacrifice.  Sam Dugan (/Middletown North), who has recorded an RBI in each game this tournament, singled to bring Flores home, to increase the Blues’ lead to 2-0.

Itasca would put up its lone run in the top of the sixth inning, off of an Emma Nelson RBI double, but Brookdale would get that back with an RBI single by Sam Deixler (Southern Regional) to score Amanda Svenson (Middletown North)

Svenson would then retire the side in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
