The Rock Band Network Music Store Goes Live

Posted in Music, Video Games on March 19, 2010 by bccstall
Harmonix Music Systems and MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks, today announced that the Rock Band Network Music Store opens to the public today, giving Rock Band fans and music lovers a new avenue to discover music and providing musicians and labels the opportunity to produce and promote tracks for the Rock Band platform. The Rock Band Network, announced in July,is a ground-breaking initiative that gives musicians, publishers and record labels the ability to author their original recordings into gameplay files to promote and sell their music as playable Rock Band tracks through the Rock Band Network Music Store (RBN Store).
In addition, it was announced today that T-Mobile has signed on as launch partner of the Rock Band Network to develop an “Artist-of-the-Month” feature beginning in April 2010 to help fans identify and connect with new talent in the Rock Band Network.
“The Rock Band Network Music Store gives artists at any level the opportunity to reach new fans through our deeply engaging interactive platform,” said Paul DeGooyer, senior vice president of Electronic Games and Music for MTV Networks Music Group. “This new pathway for discovery is a huge win for passionate music fans, as well as an opportunity for artists to promote themselves while positively impacting their bottom line.”
Artists who submit songs for the Rock Band Network Music Store are able to choose from multiple pricing tiers for individual tracks and receive a royalty of 30 percent of the retail selling price (excluding tax) for every track purchased through the RBN Store. There are currently more than 100 songs available for purchase in the Rock Band Network Music Store from artists including The Shins, The Hold Steady, The Main Drag, Bang Camaro, of Montreal, Jonathan Coulton, Skeleton Witch, 3 Inches of Blood, Lacuna Coil, Stroke 9, and Steve Vai*. There are more than 300 artists in the RBN pipeline, with additional tracks already on the way from Flight of the Conchords, The Smashing Pumpkins, Twin Atlantic, All That Remains, Clutch, Prong, The Gaslight Anthem and many more coming so
With more than 1,100 tracks available to date in the original Rock Band platform, the Rock Band Network Music Store will immediately boost the number of available songs, further securing MTV Games and Harmonix’s position as the leading provider of downloadable content for music-based video games.
“The response to and interest in the Rock Band Network has been even greater than we originally expected,” said Alex Rigopulos, CEO and co-founder of Harmonix Music Systems. “We’re very excited about the number of bands and labels who have geared up to participate in the Rock Band Network, as well as the number of enthusiasts who have signed up to participate in the Peer Review and Playtest processes.”
Since launching the Rock Band Network open beta in January, more than 4,300 new users have registered as authors and peer reviewers on http://Creators.RockBand.com, the site where songs are submitted before they are approved to be sold. Authors create Rock Band song packages and submit them to the site to go through two processes: Playtest, where the community delivers feedback on a work in progress track, and Peer Review, where revised and final drafts are vetted and approved for sale. During Peer Review, songs are tested for playability, adherence to the authoring standards of Rock Band and checked to check for violations of XNA Creators Club Online community standards (vulgarity, adult content, original content, etc.).
Peer reviewers have the unique opportunity to play Rock Band Network content for free, well in advance of a track’s commercial release. These fans can help shape the track’s final versions, providing crucial feedback and flagging issues throughout Playtest and Peer Review that ensures songs are up to the high standards set by Harmonix. Any music fan with Rock Band 2 for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and an internet connected PC can join the Playtest and Peer Review processes by purchasing an XNA Creators Club Online Premium membership through http://creators.xna.com/membership.
Once tracks are approved, they are transferred to the Rock Band Network Music Store, an in-game music marketplace where the millions of Rock Band fans will be able to explore this constantly growing set of new content. In an exciting turn of events, for the first time in the Rock Band franchise, users will be able to download sample gameplay of each track to try before they buy! Songs will debut exclusively on Xbox 360 for 30 days. A selection of standout tracks will then be made available on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system from Sony Computer Entertainment America and the Wii™ home videogame console from Nintendo.

The Postman Syndrome’s Final Delivery by Anthony Kousoulos

Posted in Music on March 15, 2010 by bccstall
“Although the fidelity of the demos varies in quality, the strength of the songs nonetheless comes through….We’ve been promising that the unreleased Postman Syndrome demos would be coming out soon for a while now, but that now is no longer soon, it’s now. And by now I mean in 3 months.” stated Chris Alfano, former Postman Syndrome guitarist, and current member of East of the Wall in a recent interview.
The Postman Syndrome’s unreleased demos will finally see the light of day this spring. The defunct band, which has evolved into several side projects, which were Day without Dawn, Biclops, and the current project East Of The Wall, is self-releasing the songs that would have become The Postman Syndrome’s final record.
The Postman Syndrome described by Alex Henderson of All Music Guide is said to be “an unpredictable, risk-taking alternative rock/alternative metal outfit who changes moods frequently and thrives on intricate melodies as well as brutal aggression. One minute, the New Jersey outfit is playing a rich melody that would not have been inappropriate for a ’70s progressive rock outfit such as Yes, Genesis, or Pink Floyd; the next minute, the Postman Syndrome is getting in the listener’s face with merciless, jagged, harsh bursts of metal/punk noise. And these heaven/hell contrasts work well for the Postman Syndrome.”
The Postman Syndrome released their debut LP Terraforming, on Now Or Never Records in 2002. A second album was planned but never recorded due to the label shutting down in 2004. Soon after the band split four of the five members sticking together to form Biclops and soon after East of the Wall
“Here’s the thing though, we don’t want to just release these songs on iTunes, we want to print a proper release on an old-fashioned compact disc, just like you would have bought in 2005 when the record would have come out. Actually, people stopped buying cds before 2005… anyway….So this is where we need your help. We’re all broke because we’re in a band, and going on tour because we’re in a band, supporting our new record that’s actually a new record,    “Ressentiment”(East Of The Wall), which comes out in July. We’re not the kind of band that makes money on tour…. well really we’re not the kind of band that makes money, period. In fact we lose money. We hemorrhage it.” stated Alfano during the interview.
“Most of the material on God Relieve Our Grief has never been heard. Various mixes of a few tracks have been floating around torrent sites for a while, but even those have not been heard as they were meant to. Most of the music on this record is remixed, and several songs have new instruments and vocals tracked to complete the recordings. This is the
first official release of this music, which was written and recorded from 2003-2005.”
East Of The Wall / The Postman Syndrome will be releasing this collection of songs via iTunes. However, they wanted to have a proper physical copy as well. Thus, the band is taking preorders to help fund this self-financed endeavor. If roughly 100 copies are ordered then they’ll be able to afford a pressing. If not, the money will be refunded to everyone and the album will be released online only. Also at a location yet to be announced these songs will be performed and integrated into an East of the Wall performance to help with the nostalgia. “We’ll be playing a record release show for the album on May 22nd, and doing a couple old songs to say thanks before playing a full East Of The Wall set,” said Alfano.
Tentative track list (in no particular order):
- “Gut
”- “Heads Below Or Tails”
- “Water Signs”
- “The Order Of Levin” (new drums, remix)
- “Be Fruitless and Vanish” (new drums, remix)
- “Sent” (aka untitled song #3)
- “Pedovile” (remix)
- “Beards Mahoney” (remix)
- “It’s A Burden, I Know” (new drums, guitars, vocals, remix)
- “The Consequence Of Cowardice”(new recording, guest vocals by Greg and Joe from Fake Gimms)
- and a segue or two
